Epilepsy is a disorder in which there is recurrent, excessive and abnormal electrical activity in the brain which can lead to abnormal movements of body parts, abnormal sensations or sudden behavioral changes with loss of awareness. Uncontrolled jerking movements of all four limbs is a commonly reported seizure presentation but other manifestations can include
Jerking or twitching of a single limb
Intermittent loss of awareness with vacant staring
Sudden change in behavior or personality
Perception of unusual smells, sounds or flashes of light
About 80 percent of seizure disorders can be controlled with medical treatment and patients can lead a normal lifestyle. Anti-epileptic medications once started have to be titrated so as to achieve optimal seizure control without unwanted side effects. Further decision regarding discontinuation of anti-epileptic medications can be taken based on clinical findings, EEG studies and brain imaging.Â
