Vertigo (Chakkar) is a sensation of spinning or movement and is only a neurological symptom and not a disease by itself. To understand the exact position of head and neck in space our body relies on communication pathways between the vestibular apparatus in the inner ear, brainstem, cerebellum and higher centers in the cerebral cortex. Malfunction of any of these centers or their connections can result in vertigo. We are the first center in Mumbai and Thane to have an integrated vertigo and balance laboratory providing comprehensive evaluation for all dizzy and unsteady patients.
Careful clinical evaluation at our clinic followed by dedicated investigations with tools like VNG (Video nystagmography) and VEMP (Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential) recording can help us pinpoint the exact mechanism of vertigo in a particular patient and thus allow long term resolution of symptoms.Â
Causes of vertigo can range from common conditions like BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) and vestibular neuritis to emergency scenarios like posterior circulation stroke. Depending on the cause of vertigo patients can be treated with both medicines and vestibular rehabilitation exercises.
Imbalance results from defect of mechanisms responsible for maintaining erect posture in humans which can often lead to repeated falls. In elderly patients falls are often due to multiple problems which can be elucidated by systematic clinical evaluation followed by investigations like CDP (Computerized Dynamic Posturography) followed by postural and gait rehabilitation.
